Questions from boat owners.

  • Where should I start with boat maintenance?

Identify your engine and equipment, find their manuals and collect the maintenance history. Use our maintenance guide to plan routine observations, then our checklist to record what needs follow-up. Manufacturer instructions and running hours determine servicing; a generic calendar cannot replace them.

  • Does every narrowboat need the same blacking interval?

No. Hull material, coating system, previous work and inspection findings matter. Review the coating maker's guidance and survey or yard recommendations. A steel narrowboat and a GRP river cruiser need different care.

  • Can I leave a boat unattended through winter?

Make an installation-specific plan for frost, charging, water ingress, moorings and visits. A lived-on boat and an unoccupied boat have different needs. Check our seasonal guide and arrange professional help where the equipment is unclear.

  • Is a completed checklist proof that my boat is safe?

No. It is a planning and recording aid, not a professional survey, BSS examination or clearance to depart. Resolve faults, follow equipment instructions and arrange the relevant professional checks.

  • Does Inland Boat offer repairs?

No. We publish editorial guidance. We do not inspect, service or certify boats and do not claim to be a repair service. Use qualified marine professionals for hazardous systems and work beyond your competence.

  • Does Inland Boat sell insurance?

No. Inland Boat is an independent editorial affiliate publisher, not an insurer or broker. We do not give personal insurance advice, collect quote information, take payment or arrange or bind cover. Quotes and purchases take place on the provider's website.

  • How do I get a quote?

Explore the provider directory and follow a provider's website link. Give that provider accurate information about your boat, use, mooring and cruising area. It decides eligibility, price and terms; a listing here does not mean it will offer you cover.

  • Do I need insurance for a CRT licence?

The Canal & River Trust's boat insurance guidance sets out its third-party insurance requirements. Check the current official wording, including the minimum cover and any conditions, before buying or renewing a licence. A licence and a BSS certificate do not establish the cover in your policy.

  • What about Environment Agency waters?

Environment Agency registration is separate from a CRT licence. Start with GOV.UK's boat registration guidance and check the requirements for the particular waterway and type of boat. Rules for one navigation authority should not be assumed to apply to another.

  • Can a liveaboard or continuous cruiser get cover?

Ask each provider whether it accepts residential use and continuous cruising, and how those uses must be declared. Describe how you actually use the boat. Only the provider can confirm the available policy and its conditions.

  • Can I insure a hire or trip boat here?

Inland Boat does not arrange commercial cover. Ask a provider about your exact operation, passenger numbers, use and required certificates. Leisure wording should not be assumed to cover hire or paid trips.

  • Is breakdown membership the same as insurance?

No. Breakdown assistance, such as a River Canal Rescue membership, and an insurance policy have different purposes and terms. Check each separately; membership is not evidence that your boat has insurance.

  • Does Inland Boat compare every provider or show premiums?

No. The directory is a selected editorial list, not the whole market, and is not ranked by price. We do not quote premiums. Obtain a current quote and compare the cover, exclusions, excesses and conditions directly with providers.

  • Are provider links affiliate links?

Currently all provider links are ordinary links labelled Website link; there are no verified affiliate tracking links in use. If an approved affiliate link is added, it will be labelled Ad · Affiliate link beside that link. We may then earn commission. Read the affiliate disclosure for details.

  • Who handles an existing policy or claim?

Use the insurer, broker or claims handler named in your certificate and policy documents. Inland Boat cannot receive a claim, amend a policy or confirm cover. If anyone is in immediate danger, call 999.

  • Does Inland Boat collect my details?

There are no quote, claims or contact forms in this version, and no new analytics or advertising pixels. Earlier versions may have left records in your browser's local storage. Our privacy page explains that distinction and the separate practices of provider websites.
